Hypobaric Decompression Sickness and Adynamia

چکیده
INTRODUCTION A large discrepancy exists between ground-based estimates of decompression sickness (DCS) incidence during simulated extra-vehicular activity (EVA) and actual reports of DCS from EVA crewmembers. The discrepancy could be due to the effect of gravity during ground-based DCS studies. The lack of weight-bearing loads (sometimes named adynamia) will relieve pressure within the joints, particularly in the lower limb joints, in space. This may reduce gas bubble formation and subsequent symptoms of DCS on orbit in comparison to the conditions during ambulatory studies conducted under 1 G. Preliminary reports have indicated that adynamia may reduce DCS incidence. However, no peer-reviewed publications have definitely answered the question.

Individual Susceptibility to Hypobaric Environments: An Update
Astronauts are at risk for developing decompression sickness (DCS) while exposed to the hypobaric environment of the extravehicular suit in space, in terrestrial hypobaric chambers, and during ascent from neutral buoyancy training dives. There is increasing recognition that DCS risk is different between diving and altitude exposures, with many individual parameters and environmental factors imp...
متن کاملEffect of intermittent hypobaric hypoxia on efficacy & clearance of drugs
BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES People travelling to high altitude for occupational, recreational or religious purposes are mostly healthy and fit but sometimes they use drugs for common ailments like influenza, acute mountain sickness or chronic disease like diabetes. Limitation of oxygen at high altitude may compromise metabolism of drugs. Hence, we undertook this study to assess the effect of hypoba...

Scuba diving is associated with an important risk of developing decompression sickness secondary to formation of gas bubbles inside the body. The latter is formed mainly by nitrogen in the body on the diver’s way to the surface (1,2). In some cases, it might injure the central nervous system. Several decompression cases that have been associated with neurologic symptoms are described in the l...
متن کاملDecompression sickness risk model: development and validation by 150 prospective hypobaric exposures.
INTRODUCTION High altitude exposure has an inherent risk of altitude decompression sickness (DCS). A predictive DCS model was needed to reduce operational risk. To be operationally acceptable, such a theoretical model would need to be validated in the laboratory using human subjects. METHODS The Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) has conducted numerous studies on human subjects exposed to s...

Introduction: To reduce denitrogenation time to prevent decompression sickness to support frequent extravehicular activities on the Moon, and to limit the risk of fire, a hypobaric (PB = 414 mmHg) and mildly hypoxic (ppO2 = 132 mmHg, 32% O2 68% N2) living environment is being considered during lunar missions for the Crew Exploration Vehicle (CEV) and Lunar Surface Access Module (LSAM). If the v...
